High School Transportation Zones

January 15, 2021

Dear Vail Families,

We believe in providing parents with choices. We have intentionally created high schools that are similar in quality but different in size and offerings.

We also believe in being fiscally responsible. As we expand the number of high schools, we must take steps to control the increasing costs of transportation.

The purpose of this letter is to remind you of our 2021-2022 plan for Transportation Zones in order to continue to allow for high school choice while working to be fiscally responsible.

The Transportation Zone Plan:
Parents retain the opportunity to request attendance at any high school.

Students attending Andrada, Empire, Pantano, and Vail Academy and High School will NOT be impacted by the changes. In addition, students living in the “flex zone” and attending either Cienega or Mica Mountain will NOT be impacted by the changes.

Students living outside the flex zone and attending Cienega or Mica Mountain will be impacted. (Note attached map.)

  • A student living in the Cienega Zone and attending Cienega will be provided transportation. However, a student living in the Cienega Zone and attending Mica Mountain will not be provided transportation.
  • Similarly, a student living in the Mica Mountain Zone and attending Mica Mountain will be provided transportation. However, a student living in the Mica Mountain Zone and attending Cienega will not be provided transportation.
  • Transportation Zones will play a role in preference for high school choice. For example, a student who lives in the Cienega Zone will be given preference to Cienega over a student who lives in the Mica Mountain Zone and requests Cienega.
  • If parents are able to get their student to a Transportation Zone that will transport them to and from the school they attend, they will be provided transportation to Cienega or Mica Mountain.
